About Pilates

What is Pilates?

Based on the method of body conditioning and training developed by the late Joseph Pilates, it is an exercise method which relies on strengthening deep postural muscles and developing body alignment. It avoids the muscle and ligament damage sometimes associated with other fitness regimes.

It is a remarkably effective, medically approved, holistic approach to exercise which develops awareness of your own body, improves posture and can help in rehabilitation after injury.

Who is it for?

The Pilates method can work for everyone, regardless of fitness level or age. From those wishing to improve their fitness, posture and core stability, to professional sports persons using advanced conditioning programmes to enhance performance or those recovering from injury or surgery. It is also great for teenagers to improve posture and physical confidence.

Exercises can be mat or machine based, but matwork has the advantage of needing no special equipment and so can be practised at home or on the beach! Matwork is particularly safe for those with back problems and many clients are recommended to us by osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists.

What can it do for you?

The mat-based exercise aim to develop strength, flexibility and achieve muscle balance throughout the whole body.

When taught in small groups, as a structured course, pilates offers both physical and mental training to bring about a good sense of body awareness and correct postural alignment.
